Experience
For Japanese tutoring: Despite there not being many Japanese people here in Wisconsin, I have worked hard for many years to get where I am now with the language. I currently work as a translator online. It was my minor in college, and it would have been my major if my school had offered it. I certainly got enough credits related to it for a major when I studied abroad in Japan! I have been there a total of three times; one to teach English in camps and two times studying abroad. I am very passionate about the Japanese language and culture, and while I have no formal experience tutoring Japanese (last fall I tutored a Japanese girl in English, however), I have often helped my classmates as well as my own friends and my sister's friends learn the language. I have been learning it for seven years and through various teachers, reading various blogs, using various textbooks, and consulting with my classmates, I think I have a much better grip on what works in language learning, and what doesn't. I believe flashcards and textbooks help - but they are far from all that is required to learn a language. More than anything, I believe enjoying yourself while you learn is important. I've also found many resources online and I love sharing and talking about them. For ESL/TOEFL: Last year at my college I tutored a Japanese girl in pronunciation - and it was so much fun! I also have a foreign boyfriend who I have been helping learn English, so I have found some good resources for that as well. Like I said in my Japanese language section, enjoying yourself is the most important thing. If you're looking for grammar help, I can try to prepare lessons for you. If you're looking for pronunciation I will search for practice exercises and we can repeat them until you feel like you have a good grip on them. And if you're just searching for a conversation partner to test out the new vocabulary you've been learning, I'm happy to do that as well! I love meeting people from all over the world - so while it might seem my only interest is Japan, this is far from true! I have friends from Serbia, China, Chile, Malaysia, Korea, and other countries. Out of the languages I've studied, I've studied Japanese most thoroughly so I know more about what is hard for them to pronounce and what grammatical mistakes they're more likely to make, but I am happy to research common problem areas for people with your native language as well. I love learning about languages! For English tutoring: I was an English major with a Creative Writing emphasis. I have no experience tutoring English, but I love reading, I love books, and I love talking about them. My classes at school were more focused on literature and creative writing, so I don't have much training in grammar. But I do like learning about grammar - and surprisingly enough, sometimes learning a foreign language helps you learn grammar in your own native language. I'm certainly willing to research topics and try to teach you from a combination of what I already know and what I learned myself. Also, if you need help diving into a text and finding the symbolism and meanings, I'm your gal! Did I mention I love reading??
